WWF Wrestlemania VII – March 1991

February 25, 2009

WWF Wrestlemania VII – March 24th 1991 – Los Angeles, California

Matches
The Rockers defeated The Barbarian and Haku (4/10)
Texas Tornado defeated Dino Bravo (5/10)
British Bulldog defeated Warlord (5/10)

The Nasty Boys defeated Hart Foundation {WWF Tag Team Titles} (7/10)
Jake Roberts defeated Rick Martel {Blindfold match} (6/10)
The Undertaker defeated Jimmy Snuka (6/10)
The Ultimate Warrior defeated Randy Savage {Retirement Match} (8/10)
Tenryu and Kitao defeated Demolition (6/10)
Big Bossman defeated Mr Perfect {WWF Intercontinental Title} (7/10)
Earthquake defeated Greg Valentine (4/10)
Legion of Doom defeated Power & Glory (6/10)
Virgil defeated Ted Dibiase (7/10)
The Mountie defeated Tito Santana (5/10)
Hulk Hogan defeated Sgt Slaughter {WWF World Heavyweight Title} (6/10)

Moments – Positives
There a few positive moments from this event, mainly Hulk Hogan regaining the World Heavyweight tile in quite a propaganda Iraq war match as well as the reuniting of Randy Savage and Miss Elizabeth after Savage looses the retirement match. The Virgil / Dibiase segment is well done and I enjoyed the WWF Tag Team title match.

Moments – Negatives
This is most certainly the worst Wrestlemania to date. The main event is average at best and unless you were a true American rooting for your country the whole feud was pretty awful. There are some totally random matches that are pretty poor (e.g. the Mountie vs Tito Santana before a Wrestlemania main event!!!) and I just thought it really did showcase a poor period in WWF history with a lot of talent looking too old and worn out to put on a good show.

Overall Summary
Not a fan of this Wrestlemania and I would say if there is one you could miss it is most likely going to be this one. A few segments stood out but overall nothing short of dissapointing.

WWF Royal Rumble 1991 – January 1991

February 23, 2009

WWF Royal Rumble 1991 – January 19th 1990 – Miami, Florida

Matches
The Rockers defeated Orient Express (7/10)
Big Bossman defeated The Barbarian (5/10)
Sgt. Slaughter defeated Ultimate Warrior {WWF World Heavyweight Title} (8/10)

The Mountie defeated Koko B Ware (5/10)
Ted Dibiase & Virgil defeated Dusty & Dustin Rhodes (7/10)
Hulk Hogan defeated 29 other men to win Royal Rumble (9/10)

Moments – Positives
Some truly classic moments within the Rumble itself which was probably the most solid Rumble match-up to date and which saw Hogan win the match itself two years in a row to earn a title shot at Wrestlemania. Savage challenging Warrior for a title and getting rejected to then cost Warrior the title against Sgt Slaughter was brilliantly executed and Virgil / Ted Dibiase showdown was very entertaining. Both set up Wrestlemania VI. Bret Hart also shone in the Rumble as a great singles wrestler.

Moments – Negatives
A few poor matches sandwiched between some great ones as we have come to expect. Pushing the Mountie was an awful decision in my opinion and Koko B Ware simply could not work the crowd. Apart from those few matches though, very few positives.

Overall Summary
A great Rumble event which was made by the shocking victory for Sgt Slaughter and the great build up to the Warrior/Savage feud. A few poor matches shouldnt ruin the event and the Rumble match itself is the first one since inception which truly captured the Royal Rumble spirit.

WWF Survivor Series 1990 – November 1990

February 23, 2009

WWF Survivor Series 1990 – November 22nd 1990 – Hartford, Connecticut

Matches
Ultimate Warrior, Legion of Doom and Texas Tornado defeated Mr Perfect and Demolition (7/10)
Ted Dibiase, The Undertaker and Rhythm & Blues defeated Dusty Rhodes, Koko B Ware and Hart Foundation (7/10)
Rick Martel, Warlord and Power & Glory defeated Jake Roberts, Jimmy Snuka and The Rockers (5/10)

Hulk Hogan, Big Bossman, Tugboat and Jim Duggan defeated Earthquake, Haku, Dino Bravo and Barbarian (5/10)
Nikolai Volkoff, Tito Santana and Bushwhackers defeated Sargent Slaughter, Boris Zukhov and Orient Express (4/10)
Hulk Hogan, Ultimate Warrior and Tito Santana defeated Ted Dibiase, Rick Martel, Warlord and Power & Glory (7/10)

Moments – Positives
Firstly this event will always be remembered for the debut of the Undertaker which was an important milestone in WWF history. The opening match was very solid as was the Undertaker match itself. The main event of faces vs heel survivors was also brilliantly portrayed and worked very well. Sgt Slaughter was also getting a lot of heat for supporting the Iraq war which was a good spot for the era.

Moments – Negatives
Another inconsistant card with some very poor and dull matches which nearly sent me to sleep. Certain individuals got way too much ringtime and the Hogan match was very poorly executed which is very unlike Hogan matches.

Overall Summary
A memorable Surivor Series but once again filled with inconsistent card and a few matches which are easily skippable. Worth watching just for the debut of the legendary Undertaker!

WWF Summerslam 1990 – August 1990

February 23, 2009

WWF Summerslam 1990 – August 27th 1990 – Pennsylvania, Philadelphia

Matches
Power and Glory defeated The Rockers (6/10)
Texas Tornado defeated Mr Perfect {WWF Intercontinental Title } (7/10)
Sensational Sherri was declared winner over Saphire (4/10)

Warlord defeated Tito Santana (5/10)
Hart Foundation defeated Demolition {2 out of 3 falls – WWF Tag Team Titles} (7/10)
Jake Roberts defeated Bad News Brown (6/10)
Nikolai Volkoff and Jim Duggan defeated Orient Express (3/10)
Randy Savage defeated Dusty Rhodes (8/10)
Hulk Hogan defeated Earthquake (6/10)
Ultimate Warrior defeated Rick Rude {Cage – WWF World Heavyweight Title} (7/10)

Moments – Positives
It was an event of ups and downs. The moments that stood out were Saphire being bought by the Million Dollar Man and the feud between Savage / Rhodes coming to an end. Also a classic bout for the WWF tag team titles over long time feuding teams of Hart Foundation and Demolition. The Cage match for the WWF World title was pretty decent too – one of the better Warrior matches.

Moments – Negatives
An awful team of Volkoff and Dugan was certainly one of the more terrible moments of any PPV event. The card was average apart from the few highlights with forgettable feuds between stars. A lot of the matches just did not gel.

Overall Summary
Not a bad Summerslam that will be remembered for the Cage match itself and I guess a rather shoddy feud between Hogan and Earthquake. A few classic matches but not as strong as events in the past. I think the show demonstrated the uneven booking during the 1990/1991 years.

WWF Wrestlemania VI

February 15, 2009

WWF Wrestlemania VI – April 1 1990 – Toronto, Canada

Matches
Rick Martel defeated Koko B Ware (3/10)
Demolition defeated The Colossal Connection {WWF Tag Team Titles} (8/10)
Earthquake defeated Hercules (4/10)

Brutus Beefcake defeated Mr Perfect (7/10)
Roddy Piper and Bad News Brown fought to a draw (7/10)
The Hart Foundation defeated the Bolsheviks (7/10)
Dusty Rhodes and Saphire defeated Randy Savage and Miss Sherri (8/10)
The Orient Express defeated the Rockers (7/10)
Jim Duggan defeated Dino Bravo (6/10)
Ted DiBiase defeated Jake The Snake Roberts (7/10)
Big Bossman defeated Akeem (5/10)
Rick Rude defeated Jimmy Snuka (7/10)
Ultimate Warrior defeated Hulk Hogan {WWF World Heavyweight Title} (7/10)

Moments – Positives
There were quite a few positives, the Hogan/Warrior match was very hyped up and there was something truly energetic about seeing both of these individuals finally go at it in the middle of the ring. The return of Jimmy Snuka was also a classic moment as was the quick destruction of the Colossal Connection (Andre and Haku) who were undefeated at the time. The Rockers also delivered a really solid match. I also enjoyed the mixed tag match and the feud between Rhodes/Savage delivered.

Moments – Negatives
A few poor matches which seemed to have been strung together at the last minute. The main event was overhyped and ultimately dissapointing as it was pretty slow and if it was not for the hype it certainly didnt deserve a Wrestlemania main event spot.

Overall Summary
When compared with all the other Wrestlemania’s I have revidewed so far, this was pretty dissapointing. The main event which usually explodes at a Wrestlemania was pretty poor although it was very historic and well hyped up. The other matches were pretty forgettable and apart from Warrior winning the World Title, I cannot imagine many of the highlights used when showing the history of the Wrestlemania series.

WWF Royal Rumble 1990

February 15, 2009

WWF Royal Rumble 1990 – January 21 1990 – Orlando, Florida

Matches
The Bushwhackers defeated the Fabolous Rougeaus (5/10)
Brutus Beefcake drew with The Genius (7/10)
Ronnie Garwin defeated Greg Valentine {I Quit Match} (7/10)

Jim Duggan defeated Big Bossman (4/10)
Hulk Hogan defeated 29 other men to win 1990 Royal Rumble (8/10)

Moments – Positives
The Rumble match was brilliant. It truly shone through and was most certainly the best Rumble match thus far. There was an absolutley classic moment between Hogan and Warrior in the middle of the Rumble match which eventually built up the Wrestlemania VI main event. I am unsure why, but this moment will live on in my memory of classic Rumble moments.

Moments – Negatives
The opening match was pretty average and I thought the Duggan / Bossman match was pretty awful. Overall though, not many other negatives for this event.

Overall Summary
Another solid Royal Rumble event which did a nice job of building up Wrestlemania VI, and particularly the main event match up. It was the first event when you really saw WWE(F) concentrate on build up and story telling. It was also the first Rumble match up which felt like a true build up to Wrestlemania.
